This site is mine, the tracking on it is mine, and nothing about your visit is sold, shared or sent to an advertising platform.

What is recorded

When you load a page, the site sets one first-party cookie called sv_vid. It contains a random identifier and nothing else, so I can tell that two page views came from the same browser. It lasts up to 400 days and is refreshed on each visit. It is set by the server and cannot be read by any script on the page.

For each page view, and for a click on an email, social or outbound link, the site records: the page path, the domain of the site that referred you (never the full address), any campaign parameters in the link you followed, your device type and browser, your country, state and city as estimated by the hosting provider, and the time. If you reach the end of an article, that is recorded too.

What is never recorded

• Your IP address. The hosting provider resolves it to a city and discards it.
• Your name, email or anything you type. The contact form emails your message to me and stores nothing; the tracking only records that a message was sent, not what it said.
• The full address of the page you came from.
• Anything from a third-party tracker. There are none: no Google Analytics, no advertising pixels, no session recording.

Where it is stored and who sees it

The data is written to a database I control and is used only to see which articles people read and where readers come from. No vendor receives it.

California, the EU and the UK

If your request arrives from California, the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, the site sets no cookie and records nothing at all.

Opting out anywhere else

Block or delete the sv_vid cookie in your browser, or browse with JavaScript disabled. Either stops the recording entirely. If you want a stored identifier removed, email me with the cookie value and I will delete its rows.
